AKADO Telecom sponsors national IT Olympics for school students

AKADO Telecom (COMCOR OAO) has sponsored the May 17 finals of the Russian National IT Olympics for school students, a tournament held under the aegis of the  national Education project

The National IT Olympics were opened by the event hosts and partners: Vladimir Zotov, Prefect of Moscow’s Southeast District; Ludmila Yurasova, deputy head of the Federal Communications Agency; chiefs of the Southeast District Department of Education, Department of Culture and Media Center; President of the Moscow Technical University of IT and Telecommunications; Director of the Cisco training center; and other officials and company executives.

The purpose of the National IT Olympics is to find and encourage young talent, help those youngsters who are thinking about a career in IT, and popularize technical knowledge of IT and telecommunications. 220 students from 17 schools, aged between 14 and 18, signed up for the tournament. 155 of them passed the online screening test (District Olympic Playoffs) on May 12, 2008. 30 school kids made it to the finals.

The tournament consisted of three hands-on assignments: to assemble a computer, trouble-shoot an operating system, build a wireless network and demonstrate the voice and video capability. The three winners received grants (certificates for 60,000 rubles each) from the Russian Ministry of Education and Science and PCs from AKADO Telecom.

“It is only natural that AKADO Telecom wanted to be part of the National IT Olympics,” said COMCOR General Director Denis Lobanov. “The professionals who will build and implement tomorrow’s technology have to be trained today. Today’s school kids, those who take part in tournaments like these, can become such professionals. We’ll be happy to welcome them to the high-tech world of telecommunications after college.”

Support for the National IT Olympics is not the first social initiative for AKADO Telecom, which has been partners with Moscow’s education authorities for years. The company has provided high-speed Internet access for 2,000 Department of Education institutions, including more than 80% of Moscow secondary schools. AKADO Telecom built the telecom infrastructure that supports the multi- service corporate network used by Moscow’s Department of Education.
